Kaia takes Manhattan and many other adventures!
The last few weeks have been so busy that I hardly know where to begin. I guess I should start at the very beginning - I hear that is a very good place to start:)
Last I reported Kaia was a little gun shy with her birthday cake. The next day she had her one year old pictures taken at a couple of local parks and was a total ham. The photographer told me that she had never met a baby with so much personality and that she was in "love" with her. Normally the photographer edits the photos down and posts around 50 pictures. She posted 109 pictures of Kaia. If you want to see them go to www.michelleamarante.com and click on portraits. Next click on clients and the passcode is kaia (all lower case). When you click on her name on the next page you can see all 109 photos.
The next day she had her one year well baby check up. We were trying out our 4th pediatrician since moving to Newport and finally scored. He was awesome and spent so much time with us talking and answering our questions. Kaia is moving up in the world, but she is shy a few ounces that would allow us to turn her car seat around to face forward. Bryn and I are counting down the ounces:) So here are her stats: 19.56 pounds (25% percentile), 29.25 inches (57% percentile) and head circumference 18.11 inches (77% percentile).
So what is the deal with Manhattan adventures you ask? Awhile ago we took Kaia to a baby model call for a local (Boston) agency. They accepted her and put her in their baby book. We hadn't heard anything more until the day of her well baby (a Wednesday). The Gap picked 8 baby girls and 8 baby boys from the book to go to an audition in Manhattan. I was having a hard time thinking of trucking her to Boston let alone Manhattan, but the Gap is a pretty big deal so all 3 of us were up at the crack of dawn to head to Manhattan. We drove into CT and then hopped on the commuter train with stroller, diaper bag and all. The Gap only does this casting once or twice a year so it was a big deal. The call was a zoo with kids of all ages everywhere. Once it was Kaia's turn she got sat down and had 3 or 4 Polaroids taken and that was it. She was a total ham and posed and smiled for the camera. We take lots of pictures of her, but I think she was primed from her one year photos. We hung out in the city for a couple of hours and met up with an old friend of mine before heading back to RI. As for the Gap update, Kaia was called back but due to our travel schedule and commitments we weren't able to get her there. Maybe next time:)
We had planned on flying to CA the following week, but ended up flying out on Friday instead. Needless to say, it was a very busy week and we didn't get much sleep on Thursday night since we had to re-group from Manhattan and pack for CA. We arrived at LAX on 7/11 and came back to RI this Wednesday, 7/23.
It was nice to have a longer visit this time. We spend plenty of time hanging around Grandma and Grandpa's house and swimming in the pool. Kaia got to go swimming every day we were there. All of her cousins were so great playing with her in the pool and watching out for her. Now she keeps asking to go swimming every day since we have been home. She got in to a morning routine there and would wake up and walk down the hall to Grandpa's office to say hi. Grandma got lots of time with Kaia too. So much that Kaia would get upset when Grandma left the room. We also got to go to San Diego for a couple of nights and we took Kaia to the Zoo and Seaworld. It was so fun to see her so much more into it than the last time she was there (probably about 3 months old). Grandma also threw a first birthday party for Kaia at the house. I think we must have primed her with the cake experience on her birthday because this time she dug into the cake and had it absolutely everywhere. We literally stripped her down and took her into the pool to get cleaned up.
Kaia has grown and developed so much since her birthday. She is now literally running around the house by herself. She has also had a huge language explosion. She has over 40 signs that she can do herself and almost 30 spoken words. That counts as almost 70 words and she is only one. Crazy!!! Kaia is also very music driven. When she wakes up the morning she immediately asks for music and she is constantly asking for music when she walks by the stereo. She will dance, clap and she is even trying to snap her fingers. She is such a happy and social baby. People comment all the time on how much she smiles. She is always walking up to everyone (there is no stranger anxiety here) and saying hi. She captivates so many people and makes a lot of friends every single day. We are so lucky to have such a happy and amazing baby - we only wish she would sleep through the night:)
